Tenby – a wet and wild weekend

Well… we went to Tenby last weekend and, as is our luck with UK staycations – it rained. And I mean RAINED. Windswept, torrential downpours, grey skies… the works. The exact same weekend last year we were at Bedruthan Steps in Cornwall and were trapped inside by severe weather warnings… cursed much?

We arrived late on Saturday after a miserable 4-hour journey through the storm but were immediately blown away when we arrived at our penthouse apartment on The Croft, overlooking North Beach – just look at the view!

We were holidaying with friends who have a little chap the same age as Country Bebe, so the boys were instantly glued to the huge sash windows, spotting boats/seagulls/crashing waves. The place came pre-baby-proofed, with stair-gates, travel cot, highchair etc. A blessing on the packing front and it also meant that after the bath/bed Power Hour, we could just relax with a vat of pink wine, while the husbands knocked up some homemade spelt pizzas and sweet potato fries (the kitchen was amazing, fully equipped and within shouting distance of the sofa when refills were required). The sun even popped out for 0.7mins.

Next morning the clouds sat on the horizon gloomily and the drizzle fell. The apartment was fully prepared for the worst of the Welsh weather, with a huge DVD library, not one but two Xboxes and full Sky TV but not to be deterred by a spot of rain we headed out, prepared as all British holidaymakers are with anoraks and umbrellas. A 5-minute stroll through the town and we were at the harbour.

The pastel, Georgian architecture reminded the OH and I fondly of Primrose Hill, crossed with Portobello; with a pinch of salty seaside charm thrown in for good measure.

Just beyond the harbour we spotted the ex-lifeboat station that was transformed into a unique home on Grand Designs – did you watch it?

There is only a tiny pedestrian walkway to reach it, but the views must be amazing!

Refuelled with some picnic ploughmans and rocket-fuel coffees, we bit the bullet and headed for the sandy North Beach, armed with buckets and spades. Country Bebe obviously didn’t get the memo about the driving rain and ran straight into the sea, fully clothed. Much to his amusement.

Hot baths and early nights followed. Sandcastle building is exhausting, as it turns out.

Next up on the holiday itinerary was Blue Lagoon – recommended to me by a countryfille.com reader and the absolute highlight of the trip. The indoor swimming pool extravaganza – complete with rapids, chutes and wave pool – had the adults even more excited than the tots.

After some rather competitive races down the black-run chutes we retired for lunch, naps and a return trip, this time under some welcomed blue skies, to the beach for more bucket and spade action.

Before we knew it we were whipping back down the M4, over the bridge and back to the West Country. Wet weather and grey skies aside, Tenby is beautiful, the beaches are perfect for babies and the water parks aren’t too shabby either…

Next up, in two weeks, is The Rosevine near St. Mawes in Cornwall – anyone seen the weather forecast?
