Sweet dreams are made of these…

So, being nigh on eight months pregnant, my jaunts to stay in beds like this (pictured: one of my favourites at Coworth Park, part of The Dorchester Collection) are being shelved for the foreseeable.

Going into labour while on a press trip just doesn’t seem that cool.

I’ve laid my head on enough feather pillows and ruffled enough Frette sheets to know a good night’s sleep when I get one. I wouldn’t go quite so far as to say I need a 6-choice pillow menu to get my zzz’s (but thanks Claridges, it was lovely), just a good firm mattress, smooth cool linen sheets (more of which later) and a proper ‘light as a cloud’, feather duvet. None of this sheet/bedspread nonsense.

Alright, I’m a bed snob. Ironically, now I’m barely getting four hours a night (hello, leg cramps) it has become somewhat of an obsession to get the Comfiest Bed Possible. Hey, If I’m going to lie awake for hours on end, I at least want to do it luxuriating in a high thread count. So, here are my tips for a dreamy night’s sleep:

Yes, if I was Simon Cowell, my bedroom would be festooned in Frette linen. But alas the fiscal funds don’t quite stretch to £265 for a duvet cover (or even a pillowcase if I’m honest). I have however, invested in The Linen Works.

To me, this SW8-based company is like homeware porn. Inspired by the well-loved vintage bedlinen owner Marina Guirey found in her husband’s family home in the South of France, she has created an airing cupboard full of effortless, deliciously cool linens that are a joy to snuggle down in (and looks better unironed, a win-win in my book). The Levant range (pictured) is on sale at the moment, too.

Next up, a brilliant find. The Duvet and Pillow Warehouse.

Even the all-singing, all-dancing ‘Ultimate Hungarian’ duvet starts at an astonishingly reasonable £54 (single, summer weight) for 100% Hungarian Goose Down. We opted for the middle of the road 100% goose down duvet and a duck down mattress topper. Being sandwiched between the two is the key to proper, indulgent comfort in my book.

Arriving in their own zip-lock storage bags I can report that they truly do make for the Comfiest Bed Possible. The duvet is divided into smaller stitched squares to maintain even distribution and is, well, as light as a feather. A down/feather combo is the best option for an all-season duvet as it wicks away moisture in the summer and is super insulating, without the weight, in the winter.

You could stick a whole bag of petit pois under our mattress now and I guarantee even the Duchess of Cambridge would get her 40 winks.

  • Thanks for the distinct tips provided on this weblog. I have noticed that many insurance agencies offer buyers generous reductions if they decide to insure more and more cars together. A significant variety of households own several autos these days, specially those with more aged teenage children still located at home, plus the savings for policies can easily soon begin. So it is good to look for a good deal.
